Wink. Stimulating Road Safety by Changing Culture

Project Type

Film, Social Project

Date

2023

Bulgaria

Role

Creative Concept, Script, Copywriting, Video Editing

Can you change a country with €0?

According to the police in July 2023 alone there are 3742 road accidents in Bulgaria. And a study (conducted in the US) claims not using a turn signal causes twice as many accidents as distracted driving. Just walk through the city streets and you will see the total disregard of the blinker.

There are regulations, signs, sanctions (some of them severe) and everyday reports of horrific crashes on national media.

But this doesn't seem to make drivers obey the laws.

So how can you make them follow the rules?

Well, how about trying to turn signaling from a rule into a playful, cultural gesture?

I am not a driver but a pedestrian. And when I am at a crossroad the cars usually don't deem it necessary to show me which way they are going. This has lead to situations that vary from mildly annoying to truly dangerous. So not using turn signaling is a massive pet peeve for me.

This video is called 'Wink' and is a personal passion project. There's no brand behind it. Just my desire to try and make the road a safer place.

It was produced with a budget of €0. I used royalty free stock videos, music and software. It's my first go at video editing.

My hope is the next time drivers who watched it are at a crossroad, they will say to themselves 'I will wink at this guy behind me' or 'Why don't I wink at these lads on the sidewalk'. A playful gesture. Not a rule.
